Darryl Heyward Obituary

Darryl Heyward Sr. was born in Manhattan, N.Y. on September 14, 1963 to the late Edmond and Florine Heyward.  He transitioned from his life’s journey to his eternal life on Tuesday, December 5, 2023.

Darryl grew up in a loving close-knit home with his parents and siblings.  He received his education in the Brooklyn public school system. Darryl loved to play football and baseball as a kid and had many friends growing up.  Darryl attended The Alexander Hamilton Vocational and Technical High School in Brooklyn N.Y.  and graduated in June of 1984. In 1985 Darryl awaited his 1st born, a beautiful little girl.  Tyrisha Deramique Brown arrived and she was the love of his life.  He was a great father to her and spent every moment with her. He was so proud of all of Tyrisha’s accomplishments and spoke of her with pure delight. Tyrisha blessed him with a gorgeous granddaughter, Ava Bowman who made his life complete.

Darryl enjoyed watching sports, partying, cooking and eating good food.  He also became a DJ and developed a love for all music. His passion for music led to his self-mastery of writing and producing music. He was a genius in the works and if pursued further, he would have definitely made a mark in the music industry.

Darryl was very outgoing, witty and had an infectious laugh.  Everyone loved to be around him. Darryl eventually started working for the New York City Parks Department as a City Park Worker in 1989. He worked long and hard and was eventually promoted to Supervisor.  He loved his job and in 2019 after 30 years he retired from the Parks Department.

In 1994 Darryl married Dalphanie Wester and from this union came a special blessing named Darryl Naquan Heyward in 1996. Darryl loved his son and worked tirelessly with Dalphanie to ensure that he would be as independent as possible.  He loved his son and vowed to be there for him until the end.

Darryl loved his siblings and shared a special bond with all of them. Darryl was preceded by death by three brothers: Nicholas Heyward, Alphonso Heyward, Melvin Heyward, two nephews: Nicholas Naquan Heyward and Anthony J. Heyward. Darryl is survived by his wife Dalphanie Heyward, daughter Tyrisha Brown, son Darryl Naquan Heyward and granddaughter Ava Bowman.

Darryl touched the hearts of many and also leaves to mourn his passing 7 siblings: Anthony E. (Victoria) Heyward, Trudy Heyward, Pamela Heyward (James)-Holley, Efrem (Sabrina) Heyward, Vincent Miller, Otis Miller, Derrick Miller, 2 sisters-in-law’s: Karen Heyward and Donna Heyward.  Darryl also leaves to cherish his memory a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, relatives and friends.  Darryl will truly be missed.
