James L Chisolm

James Luke Chisolm also known as “JC, Chis, or Bubba James,”was born on September 3, 1937 as the result of the union between his parents, the Late Mary Fludd and the Late Joseph Chisolm, and he entered into the eternal rest of his Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ, on December 23, 2019 at the ripe age of 82.  James completed his education at Alston High School in Summerville, South Carolina.  

  Following high school, James worked in the logging industry as a logger.  Later, he worked as an employee of Varsity Chef and Strobel Oil & Tire Company.  Once he completed his employment at Strobel, he became an employee of Dixie Auto Parts/NAPA where he retired after 45 years of employment.  At a retirement celebration hosted in honor of James, his co-workers commended him for being a great manager, a team-player, and a leader who demonstrated kindness and compassion towards others regardless of race, religion, gender, or socioeconomic status.  

  Throughout his life, James was a faithful and life-long member of Canaan United Methodist Church (CUMC) in Ridgeville, South Carolina.  James had a heart for Jehovah God and His Son Jesus Christ, his family, and the people of Canaan. During his years of service in the church, James served as a member of the United Methodist Men, and he was the vice president of the group at the time of his death.   James loved to sing many spiritual songs of old. Some of his favorite songs were Father Alone, Jesus Loves Me, I Will Trust in the Lord, I Have a Song, and See How They Done My Lord. As a young man, James was one of the first youth to sing on Canaan’s first Youth Choir.  In addition to singing on the CUMC Youth Choir, he also sung on the adult choir, male choir, and senior choir. James also was a trustee for many years at Canaan, and he had a key to the church even when he wasn’t a trustee. Lol! He also worked as a Sunday School teacher many years ago.  In the words of his friend, Brother Isreal Singleton, “The only thing James didn’t do in the church was preach and play music.” In his service in and outside of the church, James always strived to lend a helping hand to others in need. He was a kind-hearted and generous person and served as a member of McDaniels Lodge, #435.

 James loved the game of football.  As a teenager, he was one of the star football players at Alston High School until he broke his leg and could no longer play the game. The late Alston High School educator and collegiate, James “Jimmy” Greene (1939- 2009) is quoted as saying, “If James would not have suffered a career ending injury (a broken leg), the Alston High School Tigers would have had a victory in the 1956 Lower State Championship Game against Sims High School.”  After injuring his leg, James continued his love for football and became a loyal Dallas Cowboys and Clemson Tigers fan. In addition to his love for football, James was a true outdoorsman. He said as a child that his father taught him how to “observe the stars at night” so he would never get lost in the woods, always being able to find his way home. He loved to hunt, fish, and garden. In his spare time, James especially enjoyed hunting deer, spending time in the woods in his deer stand, and killing armadillos which he did so gracefully at night with a shot gun in one hand and a flashlight in the other.  

 In 1957, James married Mary Pinckney, whom he loved dearly.  They were married for 62 years until the time of his death, and she held his hand during the final moments of his earthly life.  Their union produced 4 Children: the Late James Ronald Chisolm, the Late Althea Chisolm who died shortly after birth, Terry Chisolm Mitchell (Mark Mitchell, Son In-law), and Paige Chisolm Roper (Mark Roper, Son In-law).  James also had 2 other sons, Phillip Rice and Henry Pryor. In addition to his wife and children, James leaves behind these to share his memory: 2 sisters- Anna Rebecca Jenkins and Verdell Fields, and a host of grandchildren, great-grands, sister and brother in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.  James truly loved his family. He was a great provider and a source of comfort and strength during difficult times. James Luke Chisolm observed throughout life how God changed the heart of sinners, and he counted himself as one who was saved and redeemed by the love and grace of His Lord & Savior, Jesus the Christ.
