Obituary

Leroy Barcus, affectionately known as "LB" was born in Hemingway, SC on November 16, 1934, to the late Teddie Barcus and Rosetta Flegler Barcus.  He was preceded in death by his four sisters, Zurla Lee Barcus, Elder Ruby Greene, Gladys L. Littles, and Helen Woodberry.  A loved friend, departed from this earth on November 8, 2022 for another land, "a city which hath foundations whose builder and maker is God" Hebrews 11:10.  Leroy attended and graduated from Chavis High School where he was a basketball player and school bus driver. On sunny days Leroy could be found participating in his favorite hobby fishing.  He was known to keep a fishing cane in his car trunk to be ready at all times. Leroy loved to cheer on his favorite football team the Pittsburg Steelers and his basketball team the LA Lakers.  In February 2021 his wife of 62 years Angelus Middleton Barcus preceded him in death.  As a lifetime member of Hopewell AME Church where he served on the Trustee Board, as a class leader and member of the Second Adult Choir and the Senior Choir. Although he was a member of Hopewell, Leroy worshipped with his wife at her church in Summerville, St Luke AME.  Where he was also actively involved and participated in the many programs.  Leroy was an active member in New Eden Chapter #204 OES where he served as worthy patron and a member of New Eden Lodge #329 where he served as Tyler. Left to cherish his memory are his sisters in law Altowease Simmons, Victoria Sumter and brother in law Oliver Middleton, Nephews and Nieces including Charles Greene, Lloyd Green Jr., Edwin Simmons, Oscar Simmons, Derrick Middleton, Harold Woodberry, Danny Woodberry, Gregory Littles, Rudene Dillard, Angelia Glover, Mary Sumter, Michelle Doss Nash, Carolyn Lewis, and other relatives and friends.

He has not served who gathers gold,

Nor has he served whose life is told

In selfish battles he has won

Or deed of skill that he has done,

But he has served who now and then

Has helped along his fellow men.

On behalf of the family, we encourage you to share your personal experiences and preserve the memory of Mr. Leroy Barcus for future generations to come.
