Joseph Cummings, Jr. was born April 20, 1931, in Summerville South Carolina. He departed his earthly life on November 15, 2021, at National Health Center, West Ashley SC. He dedicated his life to God at an early age and was also a longtime member at Bethel A.M.E Church in Summerville SC. Then he later became a member of Branch A.M.E Church, Summerville SC. Where he served on many boards and organizations within the church. Among them were Sunday School Superintendent and Teacher, Trustee, and Men’s Choir. He graduated from Alston High School in Summerville SC and, he attended Allen University in Columbia SC. There he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in education and a minor in Social Studies. He received a Master’s Degree in Education with a focus on School Administration from South Carolina State College in Orangeburg SC. He served in the United States Air Force and was a Korean War Veteran. Joseph was employed by the Charleston County School District (District 4) for 19 years. He was a Teacher and later an Assistant Principal. He later came to Dorchester School District two in Summerville, SC. He was a Teacher for one year and then became the Principal of Spann Elementary School. He remained there until his retirement in 1989. He served as Principal for thirteen years. In 1957, Joseph married the love of his life, Alice James Cummings. They met in the J.S. Flipper Library at Allen University in 1955. They were married for over 64 years. They were blessed with two children, Joyce, and Joseph.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Gracie Cummings, his brother, James Cummings, and a daughter, Valerie Alexis Wright. He leaves to cherish his memories; His loving and devoted wife, Alice Cummings; his two children, Joyce (Keith) and Joseph; seven grandchildren, great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law; (Diane, Florance, Victoria, Adrian, Glorine, and Daisy); brothers-in-law; (Saymon and Wilkie) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
