Leroy Fields Obituary

Leroy Fields was born on August 14, 1939, to the late Mae Ida Reid Fields and George Washington Fields, Sr. in Summerville, South Carolina. He was always known for his spirited and loving personality. As her older brother, he was very protective of his sister, Bessie Mae. Many school days were missed because he stayed home to care for her when she had asthma attacks. He treasured spending time with his family. To show his loving spirit he faithfully called close relatives every evening around 7:00 p.m. Leroy began his academic education at Alston Elementary School. As a teenager, He was a star athlete, playing both basketball and football, and lettering in both sports. Leroy graduated from Alston High School here in Summerville. Leroy’s spiritual education began through his loving family. He became a member of what is now known as Wesley United Methodist Church at an early age. During these early years, he enjoyed working in the church. When Wesley launched its first Junior Usher Board, he became a member. Leroy was united in holy matrimony to Elizabeth Edwards Field in 1963. They were blessed with two children from this union and five grandchildren. He adored his grandchildren and would take great pride in babysitting them. Leroy started working at the young age of fourteen. Throughout his early years, he worked various odd jobs in his community such as picking beans, providing yard care for Rev. J.C Fowler Wood Yard and Berlin G. Myers’ residential yard. During the summers, as an older teenager, he would travel to Rhode Island to work at the distinctive Ocean House Hotel. His passion for music led him to become a professional DJ after becoming an adult. Well into his golden senior years, he listened to music every Saturday on his radio. Leroy’s retirement came after working at Westchester County Medical Center, Grassland Hospital for more than thirty years. Leroy was a member of the Progressive Lodge #64 for forty years. He was affectionately known as “Poppa Stoppa” in his Mt. Vernon community. This name was given to him back in the seventies because of his membership in the CB Base Club as his CB handle. He was a longstanding fan of the NY Knicks Basketball Team, The Buffalo Bills Football Team, and the NY Mets Baseball Team. Leroy was preceded in death by his brother, George Fields, Jr., Willie (Boot) Greene, Jr., James Geddis and sister, Verdell (Sister) Frierson. Leroy is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Edwards Fields; son, Elroy Fields (Dawn); daughter, Katrina Fields-Alexander; sister, Bessie Mae Fields Simmons (Woodrow); brother, John Fields (Climmie); and sister Loncretia Norton (Richard). His beloved grandchildren, Vincent, Brittney and Brandon Fields, Judah, and Jahleel Alexander.
