Deacon Leroy Johnson was born June 13, 1951, in Summerville, SC. He is the son of Lorene Johnson Cochran and Robert (Elouise) Duberry. Deacon Leroy was educated in the Dorchester County School system. He received his GED, Electrician and Refrigeration License through Job Corp. Deacon Leroy married the love of his life, Geneva D. Heyward Johnson in 1978, after meeting while visiting Refuge Bible Church with Minister Franklin Duberry in 1976. From this blessed union they had three daughters; Tyjuana (Abraham) Belanger, Kandace Johnson and Katrina Johnson who preceded him in death. Leroy was also preceded in death by daughter Shelia. Deacon Leroy was a Foreman (Header) with the International Longshoreman Association Local 1422, where he retired after 37 years of dedicated service. He was ordained a Deacon November 1981 and served at Refuge Bibleway Church of our Lord Jesus Christ for 36 years. As a deacon, he worked very hands on with his former pastor and father – in- law Bishop Herbert C. ( Inez) Heyward. Bishop Heyward could depend on him to perform all duties assigned and one’s unassigned. If it needed to be done, you could count on Deacon Johnson to be one of the first on the scene. He was always ready and willing to serve everyone. In the building process of Refuge Bibleway, Deacon Johnson was often one of the last men on the grounds, finishing late into the evening and preparing for the next day. After decades of service at Refuge Bibleway, being led by God, Deacon Johnson joined; along with wife, Sister Geneva Johnson, First Fruit Community Church with current Pastor and Son-in -law Elder Abraham Belanger. There he continued to serve God and his pastor as an ordained deacon. Continuing to encourage those that God placed in the ministry, where he served faithfully until he was called home.Leroy was an amazing son, brother, husband, father, uncle, and friend to so many. However, his role as a granddaddy was one of his Proudest. So many called him grandaddy and it was a role that he loved! He had a special connection with everyone that made each one feel like his “favorite”!!! He leaves to cherish his memories, a loving and devoted wife Sister Geneva D. Johnson, daughter(s); Tyjuana (Abraham) Belanger, Kandace Johnson, and grandchildren; Shalomar Dreher, Makayla Johnson, Zion Johnson, Abraham Belanger Jr (A.J) and Madison Belanger.
