Mattie Simmons Walker, daughter of the late Richard and Jeanette Honor Simmons, was born on May 24, 1925 in Givhans, SC. She departed life on this side on April 16, 2020 at the residence of her niece and nephew. Mattie was a twin and one of twelve children. All her siblings preceded her in death: Chris Simmons, Adam Simmons, Sherman Simmons, Joe Paul Simmons (Mattie’s twin), Ida Mae Pinckney, Maggie McCray, Marie Simmons, Geneva Williams, Susie DuBois, Minnie Mitchell, and Isabell Campbell.
Mattie was educated in the public schools of Dorchester County. At an early age, she began her Christian walk accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior. She began this walk with Christ as a member of Magnolia Baptist Church in Givhans, SC.
Mattie met and joined in holy matrimony to the late Harry Walker. To this union, one son was born, the late Palmer “Preston” Simmons. Mattie relocated and joined Bethel AME Church in Ridgeville, SC. She faithfully served on the Pulpit Aide Board, Senior Choir, and Missionary Board.
Mattie was committed to serving others. She loved baking and sharing her favorite pound cakes and jelly cakes. Mattie worked for many years at the South Carolina Costal Rehabilitation Center until retirement.
Mattie was grateful and praised God continuously for a long and happy life. She was the family matriarch, as she was the last of eleven siblings.
Precious memories shall forever remain with her niece and nephew, Wondell and Sidney Aiken, who were her loving caregivers. Her special nephew and nieces: Lee Paul Simmons, Pauline Rumph, Lou Ellen Carter and Goddaughter, Brenda Richmond. Her daughter-in-law, Dorothy Simmons, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
